Global Inquiries and Social Theory Research Group Hosts December 2025 Journal Club Session

At 4:00 PM on December 9, 2025, in Room B010 at Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU), the Global Inquiries and Social Theory Research Group (GIST) organized its December Journal Club session, featuring Dr. Nguyen Van Toai, a collaborating researcher of the group, as the speaker. The session was attended by Dr. Dang Thi Kim Phung, Head of GIST, lecturers from the Faculty, and 35 students majoring in Sociology.

During the session, Dr. Nguyen Van Toai presented and discussed two research articles:

Nguyen, T., Lawler, S., & Paul, W. (2022). Exploring Distressed Cashew‐Nut Farmland Rentals Among Ethnic Groups in Binh Phuoc Province, Vietnam. Rural Sociology, 87(2), 370–392.

Nguyen, T., Lawler, S., & Paul, W. (2019). Socioeconomic and indigeneity determinants of the consumption of non-timber forest products in Vietnam’s Bu Gia Map National Park. International Journal of Sustainable Development & World Ecology, 26(7), 646–656.

In the discussion session, the speaker analyzed and addressed a range of issues related to the application of community-based approaches in forest land management and the governance of non-timber forest products, the “poverty trap” faced by local communities in agricultural land rental practices, and the impact of distance between communities and forest areas on the consumption of non-timber forest products.

The Journal Club session provided valuable scholarly insights, contributing to the promotion of academic exchange and the advancement of interdisciplinary research orientations of GIST as well as the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, TDTU.
