The Global Inquiries and Social Theory Research Group Hosts Journal Club Session – March 2026
At 15:30 on 31 March 2026, in Room B010 at Ton Duc Thang University, the Global Inquiries and Social Theory Research Group (GIST) organized a scholarly session featuring Dr. Alison Jane Hulme, a collaborating researcher of the group, as the guest speaker.
The session was attended by Dr. Dang Thi Kim Phung, Head of GIST; Dr. John Hutnyk; faculty members of the Faculty; and 31 students majoring in Sociology.
Dr. Alison Jane Hulme delivered two academic presentations:
- Sociology of food systems and food democracy. The work of NGOs like The Bread and Butter Thing’ and some key UK reports, e.g. The Plan report by Henry Dimbleby. Explanation of food deserts.
- Hulme, A (2025). The Agropolis: Mapping a Blueprint for Climate-Resilient Agri-Urban Development (Currently under peer review).
During the discussion session, the speaker analyzed and addressed various issues related to food security and food democracy in the United Kingdom and Guyana, as well as efforts toward achieving national food self-sufficiency.
The session provided valuable information and in-depth insights into the topic of food security, contributing to academic exchange and fostering the interdisciplinary research orientation of the group as well as the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.
