Seminar: “Engaged Research in Indonesia: Potentials and Limits”

As part of the Social Science Methodologies seminar series, the Department of Sociology under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH) at Ton Duc Thang University hosted a seminar titled “Engaged Research in Indonesia: Potentials and Limits” on the afternoon of January 14, 2025, in meeting room B010.

The seminar was chaired by Dr. John Hutnyk, Research Lecturer from the Department of Sociology, and featured Prof. Dr. Kristina Großmann from the Department of Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Bonn. The event was attended by lecturers and students of Sociology from FSSH.

The discussion centered on the research methodology known as Engaged Research. This approach emphasizes active interaction and collaboration between researchers and stakeholders throughout the research process. It aims to address and analyze issues that benefit the community, thereby maximizing the social impact of the research. During the seminar, the speaker highlighted both the potential advantages and the challenges of applying this method in the Indonesian context.

Following the presentation, a lively exchange of ideas took place, involving scholars, students, and researchers, fostering an engaging academic dialogue.

The seminar attracted significant interest from lecturers, Sociology students, and other participants, underscoring the relevance and importance of this research approach in today’s social sciences.
