Seminar: The Sundarbans: Where Anthropology Meets History in Recounting the Riverine Delta

On February 11, 2025, at Room B010, the seminar titled “The Sundarbans: Where Anthropology Meets History in Recounting the Riverine Delta” took place with a presentation by Professor Amites Mukhopadhyay from Jadavpur University, India.

The seminar was chaired by Dr. John Hutnyk, a research lecturer from the Department of Sociology, and was attended by faculty members, students of the department, and several interested scholars.

The discussion covered the speaker’s research experiences in the Sundarbans National Park, located in the Bay of Bengal, India— a UNESCO-recognized World Heritage site. The presentation explored the intersection of anthropology and history in understanding the lives and livelihoods of people in the region.

Following the speaker’s presentation, an engaging discussion ensued, allowing for exchanges between scholars, students, and attendees interested in the topic.

The upcoming seminar, “Life and Liminality During Covid-19: An Ethnography of the Pandemic in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam”, scheduled for February 18, 2025, will mark the final session in the “Social Science Methodologies” series for the 2024-2025 academic year. This annual academic event is organized by the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ton Duc Thang University.
